5 5 CONFIDENTIAL 1191. BRITISH CONSULATE GENERAL, MUSCAT. January 14, 1965. Dhofar is now quiet but the Sultan has instructed that plans should be made whereby a Company Group of S.A.F. could be deployed there within 3 - 5 days of an incident. The Company Group, in close liaison with the Dhofar Force, would immediately set up ambushes designed to cut off escape across the Hadramaut and Saudi frontiers. 2. The Sultan mentioned this to the Commander-in-Chief during the latter's recent visit to Salala and the Commander-in-Chief agreed in principle that the assistance of the Hadramaut authorities, and in particular the Hadrami Bedouin legion, would be valuable in a similar role on their side of the frontier. 3. You will know well how best this should be pursued. I imagine it is the particular concern of Resident Mukalla. The Sultan would be grateful if arrangements could be made either for a Baladouin Legion Officer to come to Bait al Falaj or for an officer of S.A.F. to go to Mukalla - to co-ordinate plans at military level. 4. I should be grateful if you could take this up in the proper quarter, with a view to such a meeting taking place as soon as possible after January 20. 5. I am copying this letter to Donald McCarthy in Aden, and to Michael Weir in the Foreign Office. (J.S.R. Duncan) H. Phillips, Esq., C.M.G., British Residency, Bahrain. CONFIDENTIAL
