VISIT TO GIBRALTAR BY THE MAYOR OF RIYADH
(22. 1. Further to my letter of 1 August, the Ambassador raised the question of a visit to Gibraltar when he paid an intro ductory call on Sheikh Abdullah al Nu'aim, Mayor of Riyadh, on ll October. The Mayor said he had already received a letter from Miss Montegriffo reiterating her suggestion that he visit Gribraltar at some mutally convenient time. He added that he would shortly be writing to Miss Montegriffo suggesting that a visit to Gibraltar in tandem with his attendance at the Conference of Arab Mayors which is to be held in Tangiers on 29 January 1990. In addition Mayor al Nu'aim was intending to propose that Miss Montegriffo should be invited to attend the Conference of Arab Mayors herself and to participate in the proceedings.
2. You will doubtless be receiving a letter from Mayor Nu'aim in due course containing both these proposals.
If the Conference of Arab Mayors were to issue an invitation to Miss Montegriffo it would help to establish links between Gibraltar and the Arab world as a whole. Nevertheless, I should stress that Nu'aim's proposal is still tentative: I do not know how other Arab Governments, such as the Moroccans, would feel.
