Mapping of boundaries of Trucial States. Code BA file 1087 (papers 1 to 7)
FO 371/140133 1959Description
This file contains correspondence relating to:
- Maps of the Muscat - Trucial States frontiers (1)
- Julian F Walker's work on the Muscat - Trucial States boundary and tribal demands in the Dhahira region. It includes a request by Sheikh Mohammad Bin Salimin of the Al Bu Shamis [Al Shamsi] tribe to purchase arms and receive financial aid from HMG, and a request by Sheikh Ali Bin Ahmad Al Salf that the Naim tribe be accepted as another Trucial State. Britain is tempted to encourage them financially lest they align more closely with Saudi Arabia (2)
- Walker's talks with Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Sheikh Shakhbut Bin Sultan Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammad Bin Salimin, Sheikh Abdulla Bin Saleem, and all the other Sheikhs of the Trucial Coast with frontiers with Muscat. Issues discussed include frontier settlement between Abu Dhabi and Muscat, Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, the Beni Kaab, and the Naim of Buraimi and Hafit. Other issues include the Khor Al Odaid [Khor Al Adaid] problem, and British policy in Jabal Akhdar [Jebel Akhdar] (3)
- Walker's inability to meet Sheikh Abdulla Bin Saleem and Sheikh Zayed, and the rush to solve frontier disputes because oil companies want to work in the disputed areas (4)
- Walker's talks with the rulers of Ajman, Dubai and Sharjah about frontiers (5)
- Edward Henderson's conversations with Sheikh Mohammad Bin Abdulla Al Ya'qubi of Ibri. Topics of discussion include: a feud between the Duru and Wahiba tribes; relations between the Duru and the oil companies; the situation in Dhahirah where the majority of Sheikhs would prefer to turn to HMG or Saudi Arabia as they get nothing from Sultan Saeed Bin Taimur; the Buraimi dispute; and development programmes in Dhahirah (6)
- Walker's meetings with Sheikh Zayed, Duru Sheikhs, and Sheikhs from the Buraimi area. Some frontier lines were agreed and Zayed asked if Walker would consider a post as Shakhbut's adviser (7).
