Political relations between Kuwait and Persia: proposal to open consulate in Kuwait

FO 371/109820 1954
Description

This file contains correspondence relating to:

  • Conversation with the Persian [Iranian] Foreign Minister about the establishment of diplomatic relations with Kuwait, the possibility of establishing a Persian Consular Officer in Kuwait and the allegations that Sheikh Jabir Al Ahmad Al Sabah and Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah's visit to Iran was an attempt to stop an oil settlement (1)
  • C J Pelly’s belief that Sheikh Jabir had probably not been briefed on the smuggling into Iran of foreign goods imported into Kuwait or on the protection of the Iranian merchants established there. He assumed the main object of the visit was pleasure but that it was possible the Sheikhs may have been asked to obtain information on the progress of oil negotiations (2)
  • Visit by Sheikh Jabir and Sheikh Sabah to Iran and the possibility of introducing them to the Shah (3)
  • Confirmation that there was no question of opening a Iranian Consulate in Kuwait at present; the possibility of having the Iranian Consul at Basra pay occasional visits to Kuwait in connexion with Iranian residents there; the sale of wheat and rice by Iran to Kuwait (4)
