Report on Operations 18/19 October 1957 Third To A San 15/19 H (Ferrets) left MUSCAT andarrived at NAZWA about midday 15 October on a routine patrolto TANUF, HAMRA, BELUD SAIT, BAHLAH, JABRIN and GHAFAT. On the same evening "C" Coy N.F.R. moved out to bivouacat TANUF for a training exercise on the lower slopes of theJebel above TANUT. On this day reports were received thatGHALIB was very 112 at BELUD SAIT. On 16th October "Ch Coy climbed the western shoulder ofthe Wadi TANUF. After an hour's climbing they came underinaccurate long range sniping from about six rebels whowithdrew as the Coy advanced. The Coy were snipedintermittently at long range during most of the exerciseuntil they returned to bivouac at TANUF for the night. de cette entre outros On 17th October "C" Coy carried out a second exerciseon the eastern shoulder and were sniped throughout the dayat very long range by about 8 or 10 rebels. On withdrawingto TANUF the rebels followed up to within 1000 yards ofTANUP from where they were engaged by our own troops duringthe afternoon. . On the same day a messenger brought news that GHALIBwas in GHAFAT. The Ferrets supported by one platoon N.F.R.,with Saiyed TAREK bin TAIMUR as political representative,were despatched to investigate. They were hospitablyreceived by the BENI HINA and stayed the night there. ButGHALIB was not there, nor had he been there for some months. Meanwhile "C" Coy N.F.R. withdrew to NAZWA Campaccording to plan in the late afternoon. On leaving TANUFthe tribal garrison of mixed BENI RUAHA and HAWASINA tribesmenannounced that they would not remain in TANUP if the armyleft them alone to face TALIB's men. They were told toremain in the village and defend it but later deserted. Onthe way past KAMAH the BENI GHAFIR garrison from therejoined them and deserted to NAZWA. On the morning of 18th October an N.F.R. patrol foundthat a rebel road block had been established in the low hillsabout one mile east of TANUP. They were also heavilysniped by about 20 to 30 rebels in the foothills to theeast of the roadblock. The patrol withdrew after engagingthe enemy Radio contact could not be made with the Ferrets atGHAFAT.
