BRITISH CONSULATE, - USCAT. 3 PERSONAL, & CONVIDATTIAL 517/34 November 29, 1956 My dear friend, I was trying to telephone to Your Highness this morning butcould get no reply, mo doubt as Your Highness was engaged in businesselsewhere. I am therefore sending this note to Your Highness now. Your Highness will remember that the Aden Government has beenanxious to arrange a meeting at Habarut to discuss the setting up of apost of Badramant Bedouin Levies in the Aden Protectorate territory tocontrol the drahra tribe in that area. For one reason or another ithas been difficult to arrange the meeting, and the last date suggestedNovember ist, did not suit Your Highness, because the Wali coula notleave Salalah In Your Highness! absence, and Your Highness was thenleaving Selalan. 3. Your Highness will remember also that in Catober 1955 Iaiscussed the question of this meeting with Your Highness, and at thattime Your Highness suggested that I should reply to the authoritiesconcerned on the lines of my letter of October 18th to the Secretaryto the Political Resident of which I attach a copy now. The position now is that the Aden Government urgently wish toestablish their authority up to the Mahra part of Habarut, and to do thisa small expedition is to leave Thamud on December 1 expecting to arrivein the vicinity of Habarat on December A feuporary position is tobe occupied on the site of the ola Mahra tort which is stated to beIndisputpably in Protectorate territory. It is regretted that a meeting has not been possible beforehand, but in view of Your Highness previous views, and the fact that the Adenparty will stay in indisputable Mahra territory it is hoped that YourHighness will see no difficulty. 6. One further point is that as a precaution the R.A.P. are beingasked to give air cover over the post while it is being set up fromDecember 4th to 8th. To do this they require to operate Venom fighters, which would need to refuel and in fact operate from the Salalah airfieldowing to the distance from Riyan. I ans to ask whether Your Highnesssees any objection to this. I shall be most grateful, if Your Highness wishes to discussthis matter, if Your Highness could give me an opportunity to-day sothat I can telegraph Your Highness* views urgently and, if required,in time to arrange a postponement, which however it is hoped may notbe necessary. I can of course offer facilities for sending any communicationby confidential means to Your Highness wall in Dhofar. Your Highnesst sinoere friend, re Parace's His Highness Sultan Said bin Taimur, Sultan of Musoat and Oman, MUSOAL.
