Dear Rampton,

One of the ways in which we have not yet
been able to combat the threat presented by the
presence of Purki in Buraimi is in the hospitality
aiapenaed to casual callers: cheilchs rom the
interior and so on.

The Bahrain Residency s dission Pund already
contains provision for such gifts to sheikhs. We
are, however, infomed, that the zimited anoints
available have resulted in our officers* being unable
to give customary "douceurs as they would like, and
that some sheikhs have actually left ole vieiting
our representatives.

to the Arab, generosity at once implies
prestige. It would be deplorable 12 our standing
were impaired in the eyes of visiting sheikha by
the inability of our officers to provide the small
occasional gifts which are all that are required.

The Political Resident has requested that
suns of C200 each should be provided for the Consul General at Bluseat and the Political officer, Tracial
Coast, for the financial year 1953-1, in addition to
the customary amounts hitherto made available under
the Mission Pund, whdeh amounts to $750 this year
for the whole of the Gale (please see Nettings
letter No. 3503/91/ 5(52)A Of the 8th August, 1952).
We strongly support his request. These payments
are not confidential in the sense in which, for
exemple, tribal subsidies would be, and it seems to
us that the Miseion Fund is the most appropriate
place for them to appear. We should therefore be
most grateful if you could let us authorise the
Residency to spend 3200 from the Rise on Pund next
financial year over and above the amount, yet to be
agreed on, for other purposes. The exact amount of
the latter can be determined when the Residency
Peport their actual expenditure for the current year.

Yours sincerely,

J.L. Rampton, Esq.,
