DET POLITICAL SURVEY FOR PERIOD ANDING 23RD MAY, 1954. 1 Tribal From Buraimi comes the news that two European N.0.0.s of the Trucial Soast Levies have fallen into the hands of Turki. They have since been pleased, As reported last week, a patrol of turenty Levies under the command of Colonel Coriat, accompanied by Shaikh Said and a few Tribal Guards, left to investigate the report received through Shaikh Salim that recalcitrant tribesmen were stirring up trouble in the Khaluf area. On return to base, Colonel Coriat reported that he arrived at Khaluf during the late evening of Sunday, 16th, and found "all quiet". During the early hours of the following morning tribesmen were heard chanting in the distance. A little later two shots were fired, which struck the ground close to where the troops were encamped. A runner was dispatched to the village to ascertain the situation, and returned stating that the tribesmen were doubtful elements on their way to see the Shailch; they were probably unaware that troops were in the vicinity when firing the shotse Later the same morning Shaikh Said held a "Mejlis" at which Coriat counted 110 rifles present. Apparently the discontent was not anti-Sultan or anti-Company, but due to the unwillingness of Khaluf tribesmen to accept Saud bin Salim as headman of the seven Tribal Guards appointed by Shaikhs Salim and Said af ter the flag incident". Five tribesmen returned with Coriat to Duqum on the evening of 17th to continue discussions with Shaikh Salim. It was later agreed to appoint Saud bin Salim as headman of three Tribal Guards and Salim bin Said as headman of another three Guards. The five tribesmen later returned to Khaluf, apparently satisfied with the appointments. Two rather interesting points were revealed as a result of this event : (a) The "flag incident of mid-April was neither anti-Sultan nor anti-Corrpany: nor was it instigated by Suleiman bin Himyar or Yasir bin Hamoud, but was fabricated by the villagers themselves with the object of employing village guards at the expense of either the Sultan or the two Shaikhs. Incidentally the flags were alleged to have been planted by Saud bin Salim himself, one of the two headmen of the seven Tribal Guards. The coastal section of the Janabah look to Salim bin Nasir al Farisi for guidance rather than to Said bin Sultan al Majali, their own tribal Shaikh. At meetings Salim does all the talking and makes decisions, while Saia looks on and says nothing. Further, tzibesmen paying their respects to the two Shaikhs always offer the first handshake to Salim, Medical The attendance of non-Company persons for treatment remains the same. An average of fourteen patients a day was treated during the past seven days. The vaccination of Levy Force personnel against smallpox continues. 238 troopers have been vaccinated todate and approfinately 60 remain to be done.
